Why hire a doula?
Hiring a doula can be a valuable decision for individuals and families seeking additional support throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Doulas provide continuous, non-medical emotional, physical, and informational support, helping clients navigate the birthing process with greater confidence and clarity. Unlike clinical staff who may rotate during labor, a doula offers consistent, personalized care tailored to the individual’s preferences and birth plan. In addition to supporting labor, doulas offer lactation and postpartum support. Research has shown that the presence of a doula is associated with shorter labor, reduced need for medical interventions, and increased satisfaction with the birth experience. By fostering a calm, supportive environment and facilitating informed decision-making, doulas contribute significantly to a more positive and empowering birth journey.
What can I expect out of a consultation meeting?
A consultation meeting will be a relaxed opportunity to get to know one another and determine if it’s a good fit. During the meeting, I will explain the services I offer, my role during labor, backup plans, and how we can collaborate. Most importantly, the consultation gives you (and your partner) space to share your birth goals and preferences in a supportive, judgment-free environment. There’s no pressure to commit on the spot—this meeting is simply a chance to get to know one another and explore whether I am the right doula to fit your needs.
If I have a partner, should they attend the meeting(s)?
It is highly recommended that your partner attends the meetings. Attending the consultation and the prenatal meetings that follow are a great time to ask questions and build trust. Doulas do not replace partners - they empower them!
Can I hire a doula if I am planning a hospital birth?
Whether you are planning a hospital birth or a home birth, I will adapt to your environment and support your goals.
Will you come to my house before heading to the hospital?
Absolutely! During labor, it is very common for a doula to meet you at your home to provide support prior to heading to your intended place of birth.
What happens if my labor is very long?
We'll navigate each step together and make decisions based on what feels right in the moment. I’ll stay with you for up to 24 hours continuously. If labor extends beyond that, a trusted backup doula will step in to provide seamless support while I rest and recharge. As soon as I’m able, I’ll return to continue supporting you and your partner.
What kind of support will I receive during labor?
During labor, support can look like (we will explore methods that work best for you!):
Emotional Support (for you and your partner):
encouragement, reassurance, and calm guidance
continuous presence
Physical Support:
massage, counter-pressure
breathing techniques and guided relaxations
position changes to support comfort and progress
creating a calm, soothing environment
Informational Support
clear explanations of medical terms and procedures
support with communication between you, your partner, the care team
Advocacy Support (if needed):
gentle reminders of your birth preferences
support for informed, confident decision making
helping you feel heard and empowered every step of the way
Can doulas support a cesarean birth?
Yes! Whether planned or un-planned, a doula supports cesareans by providing emotional and informational care before, during, and after birth. They help with preparation, offer calming support during surgery (if allowed), and assist with recovery, bonding, and feeding afterward.
